From the German Erzgebirge 

In the Ore mountains the father would carve an Angel for the birth of a girl and a Minner for the Birth of a boy. At Christmas these figures were placed in the window so passers-by would know how many children were in the house. 

The Angels had another purpose however. The angels acted as guardians and light-bearers on the dark and difficult road into the mine. In some versions, the wooden angels holding candles represented miners’ wives waiting for them to get home.
